George P. Mitchell opened The Woodlands in 1974 with an unusual idea for Texas at the time: build a community around the trees instead of clearing them. Five decades later it covers about 28,500 acres, close to 8,000 of them set aside as open space, and is home to roughly 120,000 people.

Life is organized into nine villages, each with its own schools, shops and parks, linked by about 220 miles of hike and bike trails. At the center, Town Center brings together The Woodlands Waterway, Market Street, Hughes Landing on Lake Woodlands and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, one of the region's favorite outdoor concert venues.

Carlton Woods opened as a gated community in 1998 and grew with Carlton Woods Creekside a few years later. It is built around The Club at Carlton Woods, a private club with a Jack Nicklaus Signature course and a Tom Fazio championship course, each with its own clubhouse.

Homes are custom and generously sited, many on lots of half an acre or more, with golf course, pond and wooded views. For buyers who want privacy and security without leaving The Woodlands, it is usually the first place to look.
